CCPCS Library: Equipment in the Nest

The Nest has a variety of tools to help students fabricate their ideas as well as create high quality products for projects and clubs. Below are a list of tools that are available, as well as ideas for what types of projects they are suited for.

Learning Objects

Sphero Robots

Our 12 Sphero Spk+ robots allow students to control robots with ipads, learning how to code along the way.

Possible Projects:

  • Create mazes and obstacle courses that students have to code their way out of.
  • Design chariots to enhance the spheros.
 

Supplies

Yellow Bin: Fabrication Station

Our yellow bins contain a variety of crafting and prototyping supplies as well as inexpensive tools, so students can make a beautiful object, or experiment with prototypes of products.

Possible Projects:

  • Use the supplies do design a poster or final product.
  • Use the supplies to physically demonstrate an idea or concept..

  • Crayons, Pens, Colored Pencils, Markers, Sharpies
  • Paper, Construction Paper, Tissue Paper
  • Glue Sticks, Hot Glue, Gorilla Glue and Tape
  • Foam pieces
  • String, Wire, and Beads
  • Cardboard toilet rolls, paper towel rolls
  • Wooden crafting sticks and skewers
 

Digital Fabrication Tools

3D Printers

We have four 3D printers, a Makerbot Replicator, a Dremel Idea Builder, and two Printrbot Plays. 3D printers allow students to print physical objects from plastic filament. We use Tinkercad to allow students to create their own 3D designs.

Possible Projects:

  • Print precise models
  • Create learning objects
  • Create spare parts
 

Poster Printer

The Canon poster printer lets users print out posters with a 20" length or width. 

Silhouette Cameo Vinyl Cutter

The vinyl cutter, or plotter, allows users to cut out shapes and vectors on a variety of materials, including paper, vinyl, and adhesive.

Possible Projects:

  • Create stencils for screen-printed shirts
  • Create shapes and letters for signs
  • Create adhesive cut-outs that can be affixed to walls and surfaces
 

Analog Fabrication Tools

Button Maker

The button maker allows students to create buttons and magnets. Watch this video to learn how to use the button maker.

Possible Projects:

  • Students can make buttons or magnets quickly to celebrate special school events and holidays.
 

Snap-On Tool Cabinet

The tool cabinet, donated to us by Snap On, came fully stocked with a variety of fabrication tools, including: screwdrivers, wrenches, sockets, engravers, hammers, heat guns, drills, and saws.

Possible Projects:

  • Create products out of a variety of materials
 

Sewing Machines

Our 2 sewing machines will allow our students to design and fabricate wearable fashion and other accessories.

Possible Projects:

  • Bring out your inner designer by creating wearable fashion!
  • Combined with our circuits, create unique pieces of wearable technology.
 

Green Screen Kit

Our green screen kit allows patrons to take pictures and video with a green backdrop that includes a frame, and two lights.

Possible Projects:

  • Create dynamic images with unique backdrops.
  • Use the supplies to physically demonstrate an idea or concept.
