Using Video to Flip Instruction

Recording videos of your lessons is a great way for students to revist instruction, and maintain learning when school is out. Students respond better to videos that come from you rather than videos created elsewhere online. Screencasts, particularly those that record your webcam image, are a great way to maintain relationships when apart.

There are a variety of Screencast tools out there. The two we recommend are Screencastify, and WeVideo. Screencastify is easy to use and Wevideo has an advanced suite of editing tools to make videos more engaging.

Some Tips:

  1. Don't worry about mistakes. This is not cinema; this is screencasting. Don't create video with the idea of editing it later. Just pretend you are doing it live in front of students
  2. Don't make it too long. Consider that students will not watch more than 5 minutes.
  3. Consider the size of the video. Students may not be able to read small text. Screencastify provides some helpful tools for zooming and highlighting text.

Additional Resources

Add your video to a Google Classroom assignment

Below are some videos that support you in creating different assignments on Google Classroom. You can embed Youtube videos. You can upload videos from Drive, and you can create Google Doc templates for students to complete.

This video gives an overview of how to create Google Document templates and attach them to Google Classroom Assignments.
This video walks through how to use Google Forms within Google Classroom for assignments.

Adding your Google Drive Video to a Canvas Assignment

In order to easily embed Google Drive videos to your Canvas site, you need to make sure to turn on Google Drive integration in your Canvas account.

Next, when you are in the editor for an Assignment, you can use the dropdown box to add Google Drive information. If you don't see the Drive Icon, click on the light blue drop down arrow!

Using WeVideo to Create Video

WeVideo is an ideal tool to create screencasts, or recordings of your computer screen. One easy way to flip your classroom is to record yourself speaking through a Slideshow presentation. Use these videos to learn how to record a screenshot, and to use Voiceover over an already created video.

Note: you can choose to record both screen and webcam simultaneously, although this video does not show this.

Whiteboard Software

Whiteboard software turns your trackpad or mouse and screen into a blank whiteboard. This is an ideal tool for math, allowing teachers to annotate their screens while recording with a screen capture software.
